Workshops in Gainesville, FL on Saturday October 3rd, 2009

with Victoria & Federico

www.TampaTangoArgentino.com

Musicality and Essential Basics: Theory and practice.

This workshop will focus on the basics of tango musicality focusing on ‘musical cues’ on how to move with the rhythm and melody. Federico and Victoria will center the attention on the art of ‘creative’ walking and dancing to the music, reminiscent of drawing music with your feet and always embracing the music.  Understanding tango musicality is what makes a good dancer, a GREAT one!

This is a course for all levels of tango dancers.

Time: 1 pm to 2:30 pm

Molinete and its variations – including sacadas and barridas-

This workshop will focus on the possibilities of the molinete including elements of improvisation allowing the dancers to create their own figures in the line of dance.  This workshop is great for beginners but also recommended for more advanced dancers who feel locked into dancing only set patterns and would like to dance more creatively.

This workshop will be a multilevel workshop; however it is required to know the basic concept of molinete (grapevine).

Time: 2:45 pm to 4:15 pm

Dissociation: Voleos and Ganchos

This workshop will focus on the dissociation technique and the complexities of dissociation through contra body movements, maintaining frame and axis.  Voleos and Ganchos will be the focal point of this workshop using the right posture of the body, the right lead, and the correct placement of the lady’s leg.

This workshop will be for the intermediate or advanced tango dancer.

Time: 4:30 pm to 6 pm

The workshops are 90 minutes each.  We recommend bringing high heels and lower heels for the ladies and comfortable clothing.

Prices:

1 workshop $ 20

2 workshops $ 35

3 workshops $ 50

* Students discount (with a valid student ID) 3 workshops $ 45

Schedule:

1 pm to 2:30 pm: Musicality and Essential Basics: Theory and practice.

2:45 to 4:15 pm: Molinete and its variations – including sacadas and barridas-

4:30 pm to 6 pm :  Dissociation: Voleos and Ganchos

LOCATION: 601 S Main Street, Gainesville, FL 32601

Mimi Santapa Workshops

Posted in Uncategorized on April 23, 2009 by openhorizonsteve

Mimi Santapa Workshop coming  June 19-21, 2009 – Tallahassee; June 26-28, 2009 – Gainesville

Watch for Updates

by David Chayes

Thanks to Gordon Erlebacher, Mimi Santapa will be in Florida from June 19 through June 28, to teach…US!!!

Mimi’s depth of understanding of tango is inexhaustible and profound. So much, that she is in Argentina a legend, and so was her father (“el Marioneto”) who taught her.

This year, like last year, we expect that the best dancers of various towns will come to participate in her workshops and to take private lessons with her. Only, due to word of mouth spreading of Mimi’s reputation, we expect 1000% OR SO MORE of them to come. Gordon and I are working on improving the framework for her teachings to be more easily received, BEFORE she arrives. The necessity of preparation was impressed on many, including myself: I found myself, over time, on many occasions as I was studying, discovering, and integrating concpepts of tango technique, saying to myself: “Aha! THAT’S what Mimi was talking about!”

The idea is this: Mimi has created, in her own person, priceless values. We are working hard to help prepare the way so she can deliver those values to as many people as possible.

Mimi Santapa grew up as a girl, observing her father, Mariano Leotera, teaching the tango dancers of his generation. Mr. Leotera, nicknamed “el Marioneta” was himself a famous dancer of the golden age of tango. His lasting achievement is his development of an integrated understanding of tango, and a methodical way of teaching it (his collection of 30 patterns still serve as the basis for many tango teachers’ methods today.)

Mimi witnessed many great dancers pass trough the hands of her father, among them the late Carlos Gavito and Juan Carlos Copes, who were in the same class together!

When Mimi teaches, she reminds us often: “these are just the things my father taught me, with a few things I added through my own understanding of the body.” Mimi is, like her father, an integrator. Her knowledge of tango is related seamlessly with her understanding of the body, which she practices as a podiatrist in Buenos Aires, where she also runs her tango academie.

Today, many of the great tango performers know about “Mimi’s secrets” about posture and balance. Her power is, in the words of Gordon Erlebacher, in “making the invisible, visible.” Gordon, who met Mimi in France, is responsible for introducing Mimi to North Florida in 2008, first in Tallahasse, and then with our cooperation in Gainesville.

There will be 6 days of workshops between Tallahassee and Gainesville. The cost will be $20 workshop. If you participate in 2 cities, the second series will cost $15 per workshop.

(Clarification: Friday’s workshops are $20, and the rest of the workshops are $25 individually but $80 for 4.

For example: All 12 workshops would be $120 + $90.
8 would be $120 + $30. (i.e. 6 in Gainesville, 2 in Tallahassee.)
